Poway OnStage Arts in Education Initiative Programs:
Musical Theater Camp
Introduction to Instruments
Poway OnStage is proud to provide performing arts programs to our schools. Since 1999 Poway OnStage, in collaboration with the Poway Unified School District, has offered its Arts in Education Initiative to 3,000+ children in grades K-12 each year.
This four-part program is designed to broaden the children’s knowledge of the performing arts, thereby enhancing their academic, social, and intellectual growth. By working closely with the Poway Unified School district, the Foundation provides valuable learning opportunities, including in-school workshops, classes with visiting artists, a one-week, all-expenses-paid theater camp, and more. These activities provide children with a platform to develop artistic and creative abilities, critical thinking, teamwork, and social skills while introducing them to the world of theater, dance, and music.
Every year, Poway OnStage brings the nationally recognized, Montana-based Missoula Children’s Theatre to our community’s young people. In March, MCT holds a two-hour audition for up to 115 children ages 5-18 from across the North Inland region. Of those who audition, 60 are chosen to attend an all-expenses-paid day-camp at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts that culminates in two shows of a contemporary and comedic production of classic works.
In addition, MCT hosts up to six In-School workshops for youth that teach them a variety of theater arts skills. Past workshops have included behind the scenes, set construction, script writing, character make-up, improvisation and more!
This program is designed to inspire 4th grade students to take up an instrument when they enter the 5th grade. During Introduction to Instruments, local high school band and orchestra students serve as mentors to students from 25 elementary schools in the Poway Unified School District. This program serves 2,600 4th graders with participation by 60 high school band students.
Fourth grade students are first introduced to a variety of instruments before entering the theater. Bertrand's Music provides many different types of instruments for the students to hold and "play" with before the assembly, which is led by the high school band and orchestra students.
The goal of our Master Class series is to provide up-close and personal experiences with nationally and internationally known performing artists. We accomplish this by hosting select artists from our Professional Performance Season who offer demonstrations of their work, plus time for questions and answers, to children and adults.
During our 2014-15 Season, The Romeros met with a group of elementary school students to perform and demonstrate the sounds of a classical guitar. The Romeros are known as the "Royal Family of the Guitar."
At Poway OnStage, we strongly believe in the importance of bringing the arts to our region’s young people. Our goal is to help them develop an appreciation for the arts that lasts a lifetime; provide affordable entertainment that the entire family can enjoy; and build future audiences. Youth Tickets are offered to children ages 5-18 at a discounted cost for each show in our Professional Performance Season. Youth Tickets are made possible by GEICO.
