In-School Workshops
Poway OnStage offers in-school workshops to schools located within San Diego County in conjunction with our live and Virtual Performance Curriculum programs. Taught by local artists, these standards-based workshops are designed to provide creative opportunities, deepen understanding, and strengthen curriculum connections. Workshops are presented in partnership with Arts Education Connection San Diego and Southern California Ballet.
Latin Rhythms
September – March, 2025
GRADES 1 – 6
Students will explore the rhythms of Latin America through a variety of percussion instruments. Students will make their own music through body percussion and experimenting with different instruments. They’ll learn the language of percussion and connect through beats as heard in the Virtual Performance Curriculum, Sugar Skull! A Día de Muertos Musical Adventure.
The Nutcracker – Stage to Classroom
December, 2024 – January, 2025
GRADES 1 – 5
Students will learn basic ballet movements and terminology, the history and background of The Nutcracker, simplified choreography from one of four featured dances (The Party Scene, The Battle Scene, The Snowflakes Scene, and the Land of the Sweets), about the various costumes the dancers wear and about pointe shoes and point work.
African Rhythms
December 2024 – March, 2025
GRADES 1 – 8
This workshop explores the rhythms of Ghanaian culture through a variety of percussion instruments including the djembe and kpanlogo drums. Students will use body percussion and different instruments to make their own music. They will learn about African percussion and connect the beats they make to music to the music they enjoy in the Poway OnStage virtual field trip: NORTH: The Musical.
California Indian Storyteller
March – May, 2025
GRADES 3 – 5
Students will hear traditional stories and fold tales, learn about the history of the Kumeyaay tribes within San Diego County, and interact with indigenous artifacts. Taught by a member of the local Luiseño tribe, this engaging and educational presentation is a great resource for students learning about California Indians and the Mission era.
Alice in Wonderland
April – May, 2025
GRADES TK – 5
Bring the stage to the classroom in this workshop by Southern California Ballet. In this exciting and engaging workshop, students will learn choreography from the ballet, including how choreography is created, and dive deeper into how to watch, enjoy, and engage with dance on stage. Students will get a close-up look at actual costumes from the show and learn about all the components that come together to create storytelling through dance.

SELebrating Music!
September, 2024 – May, 2025
GRADES TK – 5
Social-emotional learning (SEL) through the joy of music. This 50-minute assembly is part rock concert, part social-emotional workshop, and all fun! San Diego’s award-winning children’s author and songwriter Kathryn the Grape (Kathryn Cloward) teaches children with singing, movement, and an uplifting, positive message.

Theater Workshops
March 2025
GRADES 3
In March of every year, Poway OnStage schedules workshops with Missoula Children’s Theatre Educator/Directors that serve more than 600 local 3rd grade students with an in-school Musical Theater Experience. These dynamic workshops are aligned with California State Visual and Performing Arts Standards and include acting skills, improvisation, teamwork and more.
