In-School Workshops

Poway OnStage offers in-school workshops in conjunction with our live and virtual field trip programs. These standards-based workshops are designed to provide creative opportunities, deepen understanding, and strengthen curriculum connections.

 

Latin Rhythms

September 15 – October 15, 2022
GRADES 1 – 5

In partnership with Arts Education Connection, students will explore the rhythms of Latin America through a variety of percussion instruments. Students will make their own music through body percussion and experimenting with different instruments. They’ll learn the language of percussion and connect through beats they learn to the music they enjoy in the Poway OnStage field trip, Sugar Skull! A Dia de los Muertos Musical Adventure.

Creating Shadow Stories

October 1 –  November 30, 2022
GRADES 2 – 7

In partnership with Southern California Ballet, students will explore static and dynamic shapes and create a collaborative demonstration inspired by various stimuli. Students will use a scene from their class literature text to create a shadow screen dance. Students will learn choreography, static and dynamic shapes, coordinate and collaborate on movement and refine for performance quality, production elements and content from Literature.

The Nutcracker – Stage to Classroom

December 1, 2022 – January 15, 2023
GRADES 1 – 5

In partnership with Southern California Ballet, students will learn basic ballet movements and terminology, the history and background of The Nutcracker, simplified choreography from one of four featured dances (The Party Scene, The Battle Scene, The Snowflakes Scene, and the Land of the Sweets), about the various costumes the dancers wear and about pointe shoes and point work.

African Rhythms

February 1 –  March 31, 2023
GRADES 4 – 8

In partnership with Arts Education Connection San Diego, this workshop explores the rhythms of Ghanaian culture through a variety of percussion instruments including the djembe and kpanlogo drums. Students will use body percussion and different instruments to make their own music. They will learn about African percussion and connect the beats they make to music to the music they enjoy in the Poway OnStage virtual field trip: NORTH: The Musical.

MCT Presents Rumpelstiltskin

Saturday, March 11, 2023: Public Performances – 3:00 PM and 7:00 PM

Show Run time: 60 minutes. Virtual Field Trip is available.

 

The Missoula Children’s Theatre presents RUMPELSTILTSKIN, an original adaptation of the classic children’s story.  A strange little gnome appears from here, there, and everywhere. He will spin your straw into gold…for a price. If his price is too steep, you must guess his name…RUMPELSTILTSKIN! Join in the fun of Festival Time and help Clara guess the mischievous little gnome’s name. You will also encounter a Jester, Villagers, Wizards, a Queen, a King, Knights and a band of busy little Bees. This heart-warming take of mischief and friendship answers more questions than just, “What is that little man’s name?”

California Indian Storyteller Assembly

April 1 – May 26, 2023
GRADES 1 – 6

Native American Abel Silvas portrays Running Grunion, the California Indian Storyteller. His stories reveal what life was like for his family throughout the history of California from pre-Contact long ago to the Spanish/Mission period, to the Mexican/Rancho period and to American/reservation periods. Students will learn how the Indigenous California peoples adapted to change and continue to be a vital part of today’s society.

Musical Theater Camp

Every year, Poway OnStage brings the nationally recognized Missoula Children’s Theatre

In March of every year, Poway OnStage schedules workshops with Missoula Children’s Theatre Educator/Directors that serve more than 600 local 3rd grade students with an in-school Musical Theater Experience.  These dynamic workshops are aligned with California State Visual and Performing Arts Standards and include acting skills, improvisation, teamwork and more.

Music FUNdamentals Assemblies

 

These 40 minute assemblies are part rock concert, part music class nd all fun! San Diego children’s music icon Steve Denyes, of Hullabaloo, teaches students the “Three Ingredients of Music” with singling, movement, and an uplifting, positive message.
