SHOW SYNOPSIS: The Wizard of Oz

For more than 20 years, Poway OnStage has partnered with the world-renowned Missoula Children’s Theatre to present its annual Musical Youth Theater Camp. Children K-12th grade will audition, rehearse and stage a full-scale musical performance in just six days! This year, local young thespians will perform an all-new version of the classic tale Robin Hood. Auditions and participation are free and open to the public as they are supported by Poway OnStage’s donor supported Arts in Education Initiative.

The Missoula Children’s Theatre presents The Wizard of Oz, an original adaptation of  the classic children’s fantasy book, written by author L. Frank Baum. The story is as familiar as it is beloved. That nasty tornado carries Dorothy and her canine pal Toto from the friendly confines of her Kansas home to a fabled fantasy of mystery in the land of Oz. Our story begins with the illusionists who set the scene for the tale you are about to witness. With the help of the Munchkins and Glinda herself, the young Miss Gale and her loyal pooch join forces with the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and, of course, the Cowardly Lion. Off they go down the Yellow Brick Road, side stepping a Wicked Witch and her ferocious Kalidahs, Sprouts that are far nicer-looking than they act, and the loyal Green Guard, on their perilous journey to find the Wizard and ask for his help. For they are sure his Wizness will grant their wishes and send Dorothy and Toto back to their home – or will he? We’ll never tell. Come see for yourself.

Monday: Auditions

On Monday at 4:00pm, MCT holds a two-hour audition on stage at the PCPA.  Over 100 children (K-12th grade) from across the North Inland San Diego County participate in this fun, low-stress group audition. Of those who audition, approximately 60 are chosen to attend the all-expenses-paid production camp after school that week.

Monday – Friday: Rehearsals

Directly following the auditions, selected students begin rehearsing, learning lines, songs and dances to prepare for two shows of a contemporary and comedic production of classic works – in just 5 days!  Imagine a theater filled with laughter, learning and building a life-long love for the performing arts.

Saturday: Performances

By Saturday, the students are fully prepared to present an all-new production of a classic work – with sets, costumes and HUGE smiles!
