In Not The Right Mom, Megan Dolan invites audiences into her world of parenting a child on the autism spectrum, where expectations often crumble, and unconditional love leads the way. The solo performance combines sharp storytelling with original music composed by Jessica Hayes and Joseph Ott, creating a multi-sensory experience that is both humorous and poignant. Directed by Wendy Hammers, with additional direction from Bethany Price, the show offers a raw and relatable exploration of motherhood.

The narrative unfolds through a series of personal anecdotes and reflections, highlighting the challenges and triumphs of raising a child with unique needs. Megan’s candid approach allows the audience to connect with her journey, finding humor and humanity in the everyday moments that define parenthood. The integration of digital images enhances the storytelling, providing visual context to pivotal moments in the narrative.

Beyond its comedic elements, Not The Right Mom serves as a platform for empathy and understanding. Audience talkbacks and writing workshops offer opportunities for deeper engagement, fostering a community dialogue about the complexities of parenting and the diverse experiences that shape it. The show’s impact is evident in the feedback from viewers, such as a young man in his early 20s who shared, I was an IEP kid and I never thought about what my mom went through while I was growing up. This show gave me more compassion for her experience.

With a runtime of 75 minutes, followed by a 15-minute audience talkback, Not The Right Mom is more than just a performance; it is a celebration of resilience, kindness, and the transformative power of showing up. This show resonates with anyone who has navigated the challenges of parenthood, offering a space to laugh, reflect, and find connection in shared experiences.
