Founded in 1993, DRUM TAO has redefined the art of Japanese taiko drumming by integrating it with modern performance elements. The ensemble’s rigorous training regimen, which includes daily physical conditioning and musical practice, ensures a level of precision and energy that is evident in every performance. Their commitment to excellence has earned them a reputation as cultural ambassadors, showcasing the rich traditions of Japan to audiences around the globe.

The group’s performances are characterized by their dynamic use of wadaiko drums, complemented by traditional instruments such as the shinobue (flute), shamisen (stringed instrument), and koto (harp). These elements are seamlessly woven together with innovative choreography and theatrical storytelling, creating a multisensory experience that resonates with diverse audiences. Each piece is meticulously crafted to convey a narrative, blending ancient traditions with contemporary themes.

DRUM TAO’s dedication to their craft has led them to perform in over 500 cities worldwide, reaching an audience of nearly ten million spectators. Their international tours have included sold-out shows in prestigious venues such as Off-Broadway in New York and London’s Peacock Theatre. In 2020, they inaugurated their permanent outdoor theater, “TAO no Oka,” located in the scenic Aso Kuju National Park, further solidifying their commitment to cultural preservation and innovation.

Whether performing in traditional theaters or open-air venues, DRUM TAO’s productions offer an unforgettable journey into the heart of Japanese artistry. Their ability to blend the ancient with the modern, the traditional with the innovative, ensures that each performance is a unique and captivating celebration of rhythm, movement, and storytelling.
